🚨 Reddit’s ChatGPT Citations Just Fell 86%
Three trackers confirmed the drop, but ChatGPT still searches Reddit.
Welcome to this week’s edition of ReddVisible.
Reddit did not disappear from every AI engine. Its citations collapsed inside ChatGPT while holding far steadier elsewhere, exposing why one blended AI-visibility score can hide the signal that matters.
This week: why Reddit’s ChatGPT citations fell 86% while other AI engines held steadier, how ChatGPT still targets individual subreddits when firsthand experience matters, and why Reddit’s arrival in the S&P 500 gives the platform new institutional weight.
See what you missed from the last edition:
Let’s get started.
Reddit's ChatGPT Citations Collapsed 86% in a Week
Reddit’s ChatGPT Search citations fell 86% in a week. A stark warning for any GEO strategy relying on one platform or AI engine.
Context
Between July 18 and August 7, Reddit accounted for an average of 3.83% of citations in tracked ChatGPT Search responses. Between August 14 and 17, that share fell to 0.52%. That is an 86.4% relative decline between the two measurement windows.
The collapse is not a single-source claim.
An independent analysis of 419 matched brand-prompt pairs found Reddit falling from 2.057% to 0.289%, an 85.9% drop, using a completely different dataset. A third tracker scanning roughly 58,000 questions found Reddit's cited-source weight sliding from about 5.9% to 1% across its most recent scan days.
Three separate measurement systems, three different baselines, the same signal: something in how ChatGPT selects and displays Reddit sources changed sharply, in about a week.
There is a timing wrinkle nobody has fully explained.
Six days before the citation cliff, on August 8, ChatGPT's use of targeted, domain-specific background searches reportedly jumped from roughly 0.37% to 16.8% of its query volume, and the average number of searches run per response rose from about 1.08 to 1.83.
That is a real change in how the assistant hunts for information. But the Reddit collapse landed on August 14, six days later, and even the source data is blunt about it: we cannot confidently say the search-behavior shift caused the citation collapse.
The two events line up in time. They are not proven to be causally linked.
Analysis
The instinct in a lot of Reddit-marketing circles this week has been panic: ChatGPT killed Reddit as a GEO channel.
The data does not support that read. Reddit's citation share fell 85.9% inside ChatGPT specifically, but only 29.4% inside Google AI, 14.9% inside Gemini, and essentially flat, down 1.4%, inside Perplexity. If Reddit had genuinely lost value across every AI engine, all four would show the same cliff. They do not.
That is the real story: AI visibility is engine-specific, not platform-wide. Blend ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI into one composite "AI visibility score" and you can hide a swing that should be changing your strategy right now.
Reddit can lose dramatically inside one assistant while holding steady, or gaining, inside another.
There is also a distinction between citation and influence that most of the panic ignores. One tracker found that while Reddit's visible, clickable citation share cratered, Reddit still represented roughly 25% to 34% of the pages ChatGPT actually consulted while building its answers during the same window.
The model may still be reading Reddit threads. It is just not showing you the receipt as often.
Implications
The practical shift is in what Reddit is good for. It is becoming less reliable as a guaranteed citation tactic and more valuable as a market-intelligence and reputation surface, the place where you find the actual language customers use before your marketing team cleans it up.
That is still worth mining even if the visible citation stops showing up in the answer box.
The one data point worth budgeting around: in the same matched dataset, the citation share of documentation and help-center content rose from 4.945% to 7.871%, and citation share for companies' own domains rose from 3.116% to 5.458%.
That is not proof ChatGPT swapped every lost Reddit mention for an owned page. But the direction says your own comparison pages, FAQs, and documentation are now competing for exactly the space Reddit just gave up.
Your move: stop treating a Reddit mention as the finished asset. Use Reddit threads as research, then build the first-party page that answers the same question with more specificity than the thread ever could.
Test the same commercially important prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, and Perplexity separately, because right now "our AI visibility" is four different, diverging numbers wearing one label.
I'm Watching: I'm watching whether marketers keep chasing a single blended AI-visibility score or start tracking Reddit's influence across all four assistants separately. The teams still reporting one composite number next quarter are the ones who didn't read past the headline.
Tap Into Reddit Paid Marketing With ScalePaid
After two years of running organic Reddit campaigns for brands, I kept seeing the same pattern. The posts that moved the needle were never the ones we engineered. They were the ones rooted in authentic engagement.
That insight led me to build something new.
For brands that have been curious about Reddit ads but have not had a specialist in their corner, ScalePaid fills that gap.
I partnered with Ben Dankiw to build ScalePaid, a dedicated Reddit paid ads agency.
Ben brings years of performance marketing expertise to what has been, until now, a purely organic operation.
Together, we are closing the loop between what works organically on Reddit and what deserves a paid amplification budget.
ChatGPT Is Choosing Individual Subreddits Before It Searches
ChatGPT’s Reddit citations may be down overall, but new evidence shows it still targets individual communities when a query calls for firsthand experience.
For advice about selling on Whatnot, ChatGPT searched r/whatnotapp by name and gave it a 3,650-day window. Reddit supplied 48 of the 71 pages retrieved and six of the final eight citations.
Four days earlier, the same account retrieved 84 Reddit threads while researching AI live-chat software and cited none. Vendor websites and other sources received the visible credit instead.
The difference appears to be the query. Whatnot seller knowledge is concentrated inside one experienced community. Live-chat pricing and product details are readily available through documentation, comparison pages, and vendor websites.
This means Reddit has not simply been removed from ChatGPT. Individual subreddits can still dominate when they hold information that first-party sources cannot replace.
Practical Angle:
Separate factual questions from experience-based ones. Publish clear first-party pages for pricing, specifications, and policies. For comparisons, troubleshooting, and firsthand advice, identify the subreddit ChatGPT treats as your category’s knowledge base.
Reddit’s aggregate citation share can fall while specific communities continue winning the queries that depend on them.
Watch List:
Which queries direct ChatGPT toward individual subreddits
When first-party documentation receives the credit instead
Whether Reddit influences answers even when it is not cited

📈 Reddit Just Joined the S&P 500
Reddit officially entered the S&P 500, replacing AvalonBay Communities. The move places a platform once dismissed as a niche forum inside America’s defining corporate benchmark, even as its visibility across individual AI engines remains volatile.
🤖 Reddit Forced an AI-Slop Menu Offline
A photo of an AI-generated menu at a licensed ThunderCloud Subs airport location drew backlash on r/Austin. The restaurant chain said it had neither created nor approved the signage, contacted the third-party operator, and had the menu removed. The incident shows how quickly a local execution mistake can become a corporate reputation problem once Reddit finds it.
