Reddit Paid Communities & How Reddit Disrupts Yelp & TripAdvisor

Welcome to our 6th edition of ReddVisible.

See what you missed last week.

Alright, let’s jump right in to this week’s Reddit headlines….

This Week in Reddit

Here are some of the top stories about Reddit this week:

  • Reddit Reports Earnings: Daily active users increase 51% YoY to $91.2 million, revenue up 54% to $281.2 million and net loss reduce to $10.1 million. Close to break-even, but still in the red.

  • Reddit May Introduce Paywalls: Buried in the earnings call comments is a note about how Reddit is considering exploring “new types of subreddits” (including paywalls) in addition to stand-alone “free” Reddit.

  • The Verge Goes Further on This: Suggesting that users may be able to set up their own paid or premium communities. This was something I discussed last week as a potential revenue growth angle for Reddit. I’d imagine they would take a cut of revenue, similar to the Substack model.

  • Reddit Explores in-app AI Summaries: In a bid to simplify and summarize extremely long threads (of which there are some epic ones).

Reddit is Eating Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Local Media

Reddit has disrupted many major publishers, with a strong presence in virtually every vertical. But one surprising (to me) overlooked area of dislocation is local search.

For the last 10+ years, local businesses have optimized for Google places and sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor (for travel, entertainment).

There was an established playbook. A legion of service providers, marketing companies, and “people to call” to optimize your local visibility in these services.

Your local store staff optimized for “leave us a review on…” insert the blank local aggregator.

But Google’s recent Google changes set off a remarkable tectonic shift in these “well organized” verticals.

Here’s what happens when I search “best indian food chapel hill”….

And Reddit is a different beast. There is no one to call. There are no agencies (yet) to “optimize your Reddit presence”.

This is a huge opportunity for savvy local operators to invest in Reddit “hiding in plain sight”.

Reddit Software & Tools

The Reddit ecosystem for tools, software, and related apps is particularly underdeveloped for the #3 platform in the world.

I’m tracking the new tools that pop on my radar here:

  • KWatch.io: An all source UGC social listening and monitoring platform, includes Reddit.

  • GummySearch: The first dedicated Reddit intel suite I’ve seen, great for monitoring communities, tracking keywords, and doing more advanced keyword research.

  • Karmalyzer: I’m an early user of this “Reddit health” app. Still early, but I love the concept of monitoring this.

  • RedditInsights.ai: Found this one, a good way to group and approximate topic interest from Reddit. A super scraper.

I’m “all in” on Reddit right now as the fastest way to acquire users and build community.

As such, my course is a fluid, evolving project. I’m adding new modules weekly!

That’s it for this week!
