This Week in Reddit: August 16th, 2024
Wall Street Caution, Publishers Warm to Reddit, Google Boosts (again)...
Welcome to this week’s edition of ReddVisible.
See what you missed last week.
Alright, let’s jump right in to this week’s Reddit headlines….
This Week in Reddit
Here are some of the top stories about Reddit this week:
Wall Street Interest & Concerns Re: Reddit: I discussed on LinkedIn why I think the distinction between “logged in” vs “logged out” users is missing context.
Publishers See Reddit as Growth Channel: This AdWeek article features Yours Truly as a “source”. I guess I’m an expert now.
Today’s Google Update Boosts Reddit: While some small publishers are also seeing a bit of traction, Reddit continues to rack up the wins.
Using Reddit + GummySearch for Product Ideation: A great example of how to generate SaaS product ideas / gaps from Reddit.
How r/EatCheapandVegan Built Their Reddit Community: From Reddit themselves, so always interesting to see what Reddit holds up as the paragon for an ideal community.
Reddit as a Search Engine
One of the hard parts about figuring out how to engage with Reddit is that it’s MANY things.
Among others, it’s a:
Social media (viral) platform
A community building platform
A UGC platform
A search proxy for Google
The external Google proxy case is fairly evident with how Reddit is currently given precedence in Google. And separately, many Reddit users append “Reddit” to queries in Google as a better way of searching Reddit.
But Reddit is also a search engine in and of itself.
Granted, it’s not a GREAT search engine, hence why many users just append “Reddit” in Google:
But it’s not too far off.
In Reddit’s recent earnings statement, they specifically mentioned adding ad units to their internal search results pages.
This sounds familiar!
I would not be surprised if Reddit continued to grow into this billing. And I don’t think the tech community has fully thought through the implications here.
Reddit is definitely my “sleeper pick” for a search disrupter. And, if Reddit builds a halfway decent search product, do they even need traffic from Google?
Reddit Software & Tools
The Reddit ecosystem for tools, software, and related apps is particularly underdeveloped for the #3 platform in the world.
I’m tracking the new tools that pop on my radar here:
(NEW) NotifyGPT: Not specifically a Reddit tool, but Reddit is one of it’s strongest use cases for social listening.
KWatch.io: An all source UGC social listening and monitoring platform, includes Reddit.
GummySearch: The first dedicated Reddit intel suite I’ve seen, great for monitoring communities, tracking keywords, and doing more advanced keyword research.
Karmalyzer: I’m an early user of this “Reddit health” app. Still early, but I love the concept of monitoring this.
RedditInsights.ai: Found this one, a good way to group and approximate topic interest from Reddit. A super scraper.

I’m “all in” on Reddit right now as the fastest way to acquire users and build community.
As such, my course is a fluid, evolving project. I’m adding new modules weekly!

That’s it for this week!
